The topical quotation

"Our technology strategy is, in the near term, to improve our gasoline and diesel engines, and for the medium term, we're heavily focused on hybrids. In every study we've done, fuel cells surface as the most promising long-term pathway for the industry -- even if you use fossil fuels, like natural gas, as the source of hydrogen."

Larry Burns, vice president of research and development at GM to "Detroit News", 4 January 2006

Hannover Industry Fair 2006
HyWeb, 2006-05-12: This year's Hannover Industry Fair again attracted a large number of exhibitors. More than 120 institutions presented in the framework of the Hydrogen and Fuel Cells Group Exhibit by Arno Evers FAIR-PR. Further exhibitors in the field could be spotted along with the Group Exhibit. Though some notable players - such as BMW, DaimlerChrysler, DuPont, General Motors - had decided not to display this year, many new players entered the scene this year.

Major demonstration projects and initiatives presented. Among them was HyChain-Minitrans with many small utility vehicles to go into demonstration in several European regions. One of their Hydrogenics hydrogen fuel cell Minibuses provided public shuttle service outside the hall. Hamburg showcased as hydrogen metropolis with hydrogen and fuel cell activities underway in many fields of application (stationary, bus, ship, aircraft).

One of this year's newcomers is Electro Power Systems from Alpignano, Turin/Italy. They displayed their first product a 7 kWe hydrogen fuel cell back-up power system with web-based remote control system that can operate under on as well as off-grid condition. A natural gas fuelled 50 kWe stationary power supply for large residential/small business applications is under development. The systems comprise Nedstack fuel cell stacks.

Norway: Towards tax exemption for all hydrogen cars
HyWeb, 2006-05-05: In a speech held at the national convention of the Socialist Left, Norwegian Minister of Finance Kristin Halvorsen promised that hydrogen cars with a combustion engine will be exempted from taxation in the same way as electrical cars and fuel cell based hydrogen cars. Norway's current car taxes exempt electrical cars as well as hydrogen cars based on fuel cell technology from registration tax and annual road tax. In addition there has been no sales tax on new electrical cars. Owners of hydrogen cars with a combustion engine, however, have not been given the same economical incentive. The reasoning for the old taxation policy was that hydrogen cars with a combustion engine are not completely emission free.

Hydro presents new PEM electrolyser
HyWeb, 2006-05-04: Hydro has launched the new electrolyser concept "Inergon" for on-site hydrogen generation. The electrolyser concept is based on PEM technology. With its capacity of up to 10 Nm³/h of hydrogen production it offers a higher throughput than typically available with PEM electrolysers. Within fractions of a second, Hydro claims, the electrolyser can switch from 5 to 100 percent utilisation. Capacity and performance both open up for usage in applications like wind and fuelling stations, where input power, or gas output requirements can greatly vary.

The electrolyser produces high-purity hydrogen at an outlet pressure of 30 bar (3 MPa) without a compressor. Energy consumption is 4.4 kWh electricity per Nm³ hydrogen according to the published specs. This translates into a 68.2% efficiency based on the lower heating value of hydrogen. The unit is designed to reduce downtime and simplify maintenance and repairs. Its safe design allows for placing the unit anywhere. The electrolyser can be operated in a standalone configuration, either in manual or automatic mode.

Japan to test run fuel cell powered train
HyWeb, 2006-04-26: East Japan Railways Co. (JR East), which serves the congested Tokyo area and carries 16 million passengers a day, will start test runs of its "New Energy Train" in July with the aim of operating it on regular tracks by the middle of next year.

The concept of the initial train will comprise a single coach capable of travelling at up to 62 miles per hour (100 km/h). A diesel-run generator will provide most of the electricity, with two 65-kilowatt hydrogen fuel cells chipping in about a third. A set of batteries will allow for regenerative breaking. According to JR East estimations the NE Train will consume about 20 percent less energy compared to its conventional counterpart.

JR East's new trains are envisioned for use in remote areas where there are no overhead power lines. They could replace older battery-driven trains, or those running solely on diesel.
