Project Description and Objectives:

The first and probably most prominent project proposal in the Bavarian Hydrogen Initiative WIBA was prepared by an industrial consortium under management of the German Aerospace Establishment DASA. It suggested to supply and operate commuter vehicles on Munich Airport. The project scope included to introduce a hydrogen supply and fueling infrastructure as compressed (CGH2) and liquefied (LH2) hydrogen, and its application in various road vehicles (busses and commuter vehicles). In assisting the project preparation and quantifying of the project logistics for the GH2 supply and application vector the following tasks were carried out by LBST:
· determination of primary energy and emission balance in comparison with conventional diesel buses considering the alternatives:
· electrolysis with electricity generating mix Germany
· electrolysis with electricity generating mix local supplier (Isar-Amper-Werke)
· and with the renewable production vector:
· containerized cryogenic LH2-supply from hydro energy from Canada (Quebec)
optimization of the total energy efficiency of production, storage and fueling infrastructure. In comparison with the reference system (as laid out in the project proposal for the funding application) the following improvements concerning overall efficiency/emissions and economy are discussed:
optimization of the metal hydride stationary storage system (i.e. by internal heat exchange with the high pressure compressor or low pressure high volume CGH2 storage)
optimization of refueling components (compressor capacity and net high pressure stationary tank capacity)
Evaluation and proposals to improve the system structure for the GH2 supply vector and key aspects for an economic optimization of vehicles and stationary components.
