Project Description and Objectives:

The New Munich Fair according to the guidelines of their partners and within the limits of its financial possibilities shall take a lead role in modern and future-oriented energy and transportation technologies. With respect to this goal, MMG has more than one decade of experience with electric vehicles. MMG wants of maintain this or a comparable environmental standard and extend it on other types of vehicles. Thus MMG is confronted with the need, besided electrically operated fork lifts and light duty trucks, to switch to clean propulsion systems for vehicle classes with medium (cars, vans, pickups) and higher payloads (delivery trucks, garbage collection trucks, fair shuttle buses).
Since early 1995, Ludwig-Bölkow-Systemtechnik GmbH had talks with MMG in irregular intervals with respect to the issue of ""Introduction of Hydrogen as Clean Energy Carrier Especially for Mobile Applications on the New Munich Fair Ground"". Due to the close deadline for the opening of the New Munich Fair in February 1998, it was agreed upon to postpone the application of hydrogen vehicles in favor of the comparative investigation of electric and natural gas propulsion systems. Additionally, as a possible consistent and goal oriented carry on development of natural gas as vehicle fuel an outlook on hydrogen as a long-term option for the year 2000 should be highlighted.

Technical Goals:

On behalf of and in close agreement with MMG, LBST investigated in a study the availability of electric and natural gas propulsion versions for all vehicle classes of interest to MMG. Also a detailed comparison of capacities and costs of different compressed natural gas (CNG) refueling systems was carried out. In scenarios the introduction of natural gas vehicles and necessary natural gas infrastructure at the New Munich Fair was examined more closely. The investigation was executed between November 1996 and February 1997.
