Project Description and Objectives:

Hydrogen as energy carrier is in the focus of current discussions. Because hydrogen as a secondary energy carrier will always be produced from primary energy carriers with conversion losses in the order of a factor of 3 to 10 it will always be more expensive. As, on the other hand, environmental criteria will play an ever icreasing role, if not the role, hydrogen will inevitably gain importance.
One of the first fields of application of hydrogen instead of conventional fuels will be in air traffic and space travel, as here environmental damages will be most drastic given the steadily increasing number of movements.
In addition to storage and transport, the subjects of investigation are the liquefaction procedures and the specific problems encountered in air craft and rocket power units. The related cost factors are estimated. Subsequently, consequences of the combustion products on the atmosphere and the troposphere are reviewed. Given the enormous need for investigations in this area, only general statements are possible here. The study is completed with a description of the state of the art of hydrogen production technology and facility capacities.
