Project Description and Objectives:

While the practicalities of the hydrogen powered bus were being demonstrated and the hydrogen powered aircraft was being developed it was considered necessary to extrapolate the effects of using these alternative energy sources as part of the EQHHP project. Using the cities London, Los Angeles and Munich as cases in point 5 different scenarios were modelled: no energy source substitution, optimization of conventional transportation means, use of natural gas for public transport and heavy cargo, use of hydrogen powered aircraft, use of hydrogen power for public transport, heavy cargo and air traffic, electro-powered ground vehicles and hydrogen powered aircraft.
In addition to the environmental effects this study was also supposed to examine the cost of alternative energy use to the general public. By adding this cost to the price of energy production it was thought that a more accurate estimate could be made when comparing the different fuels petrol, diesel, kerosine — natural gas — hydrogen as socio economic factors.
The ARGE LBST/CONOC office in Munich performed this study for London and Munich as responsible contractor in parallel to and coordinated with the study performed for Los Angeles by GERAD. A final report was produced as a combined effort. LBST let a sub-contract to the University of Northumbria and Newcastle for the evaluation of environmental damage affecting both London and Munich. The Fraunhofer Institute in Munich was involved in determining the energy use related costs. LBST did the coordination and was responsible for gathering processing and calculation of data for the Munich area.
The project was successfully completed in the summer of 1994.
