Project Description and Objectives:

The research activities in this project are focused on the development of
1. fundamentals of hydrogen production by photoelectrochemical solar cells and
2. hydrogen storage as a liquid fuel by electrochemical CO2-reduction.
In Task 1, the main investigation is carried out to improve the electrocatalytic activity, the efficiency and the stability of a photoelectrochemical cell. The photo-electrodes are covered           by different catalysts to decrease the electrochemical losses of the H2 evolution [1,2]. The electrodes covered by chemically inert organic protective layers e.g. polymers and inorganic tunnel layers e.g. EIS contacts, to protect against corrosion are investigated. Additionally, the development of coatings with small values of interface states reduces the recombination of charge carriers at the semiconductor surface and thereby enhance the efficiency of the solar cell.
In Task 2, the work is done to develop efficient and selective catalysts for CO2 reduction. In order to achieve the high current densities for electrochemical CO2 electrolysis, the investigation is done for gas diffusion electrodes, high pressure electrolysis in liquid CO2 and high temperature CO2 reduction.
