Project Description and Objectives:

Against the background of increasing environmental strain due to increasing levels of energy related emissions — especially those affecting climatic conditions like CO2 — thought was given to alternative forms of energy production such as hydrogen applications. In this context, the Enquete Commission ""Technology Consequences Estimation and Evaluation"" in the German Bundestag put a research project out to tender addressed to the ""Conditions and consequences of development strategies for solar hydrogen production and use"" which was awarded to the DFVLR on the basis of its proposal. This research project dealt with the technical, economic, ecological, social and political aspects of the subject.
The participating institutions presented the results of their research in four volumes of data where volume No. 5 described the effects, results and conditions of implementation related to the development of an energy standard based on solar hydrogen production within the framework of a technical debriefing. From the summary and conclusions a short form of the study was put together as a kind of Executive Summary.
The documentation produced in the course of this project comprises the most comprehensive compendium of material on the subject ""Hydrogen production and Applications“ currently available. It answers as well the most pressing questions as to the costs and environmental compatibility of this energy form.
